SAMSUNG KNOW-HOW

There can’t be many people who haven’t heard the name Samsung and a large number of households now contain one or more products made by this global company. But you may not realise just how wide a range of products and services is available from Samsung.

The electronics arm of the Samsung family is its most well-known facet, supplying respected, high-quality products such as mobile phones, cameras and camcorders, notebooks and televisions. Samsung Electronics is so prolific that these are not all of the products they make: merely a small sample. With a corporate vision of a better world in mind, Samsung constantly strive to develop new technologies and products to enrich people’s lives in a way that will be both creative and sustainable. Indeed, many of Samsung’s household appliances, such as fridges, washing-machines, dishwashers and microwaves incorporate Samsung Smart Technology, allowing for greater efficiency, better user-control and for a gentler interaction with the environment.

Samsung also make heavy machinery, including many products used in the oil retrieval and refining fields. Some of the most innovative offshore industry units currently in use are those produced by Samsung Heavy Industry (SHI), for example, the Arctic Shuttle Tanker and Drillship are high-technology and high-value ships that answer specific needs within the offshore production industries.

In 2009, SHI’s LNG-SRV won an award recognising it as the world’s most environmentally friendly ship. The success of SHI’s shipbuilding venture is such that, as of June 2012, they had received orders for 984 units from world-leaders in the shipping industry.

As a global force in petrochemicals, Samsung Total operates in conjunction with Samsung General Chemicals to provide a wide range of chemical products and by-products including olefins, polyolefins, base petrochemicals, fuels and solvents, used in manufacturing and in the home on a daily basis.

Something which may surprise many is the range of financial products available from Samsung, which includes Life Insurance, Fire and Marine Insurance and the Samsung Card. They even provide financial advice, Securities and Asset Management and Venture Investment services.

As a company, Samsung believe that they have a responsibility to support the wider community and they do this in a number of ways. For example, they have created a programme called Hope for Youth, which operates globally to encourage the development of health and education opportunities for young people. With more than 180,000 employees and over 50 subsidiaries, Hope for Youth makes good use of Samsung’s innovative technology, expertise and monetary support to allow thousands of children to gain access to education and medical treatment as well as mentoring programmes. In response to the global economic climate, Hope for Youth now includes job-skills training and in Africa, a shortage of technicians and engineers is being addressed with tailored technical and engineering training programmes for the young.

In Samsung’s home country, Korea, they have succeeded in setting up many animal companionship programmes as they recognise the benefits this can bring. As well as a working-dog breeding centre, an animal rescue centre and an employee dog adoption centre, Samsung has opened guide dog training schools, one of which provides assistance dogs for the hearing impaired and those undergoing therapy, for whom an animal companion can improve their health and well-being. Samsung’s other dog training school is the first in Korea to train guide dogs for the blind, allowing many people to regain their independence.

With such a breadth of provision and an admirable attitude towards its role in society, Samsung is clearly more than just a pretty phone.
